Resilient Equities delivered MEP schematic design for a dual-function community center in Barrio Ensenada, a community with high climate risk located within the town of Guanica in south Puerto Rico. The community center has a resilient hub design where it can be converted into a shelter, accommodate up to 1,000 people and provide basic needs during a 3-day brownout or blackout and emergency events.
This initiative integrated advanced energy solutions, such as rooftop solar with battery energy storage, EnergyStar appliances and efficient lighting systems. The hub also include smart water management systems, rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation and low-flow fixtures. HVAC and ventilation systems were designed for efficiency and resilience, ensuring comfortable and safe conditions during emergencies. The project's infrastructure adheres to FEMA Safe Room guidelines, ensuring a high standard of safety and preparedness against extreme weather events.
This approach created substantial value by bolstering the community's resilience, ensuring the continuity of essential services, and providing a safe haven during crises. By aligning with FEMA guidelines and focusing on sustainable energy and water systems, the project sets a precedent for future-proofing communities against the increasing threats of climate change.
